While researching my pioneer female ancestors, I spent long hours studying old census records, looking for clues to their lives beyond the dates and places. I had read contemporary accounts of all the things they had done, particularly while their husbands were off on missions or serving in church positions. Yet, in that column on the census form entitled "Occupation," almost very woman was listed as "keeping house." In frustration one day, after reading the same thing line after line, I excleamed aloud, "They were NOT just keeping house." Hence the title of the book I wrote and the title of this blog. Women down through the ages have, for the most part, been relegated to "keeping house" but those two words hardly begin to describe the activities of their days, the thoughts of their minds and the feelings of their hearts. It has become my mission (some would call it obsession) to give them voices through telling their stories.
