Willa Cather's Birthplace

When my mother was about eleven or twelve years old she had the opportunity to meet the author, Willa Cather, at a reception in San Francisco. She was a member of her school's literary club, and the family of the president of the club hosted the reception. Mom and other members of the high school club were asked to serve at the event. I heard Mom speak of this experience on more than one occasion and I included her written account of it in her autobiography, Ann Coulam Wheelwright. As an avid reader, Mom was a lifelong fan of Willa Cather's writing.
On my way to Charlottesville, Virginia yesterday I took a very short detour off the main road to see the birthplace of Willa Cather in the little town of Gore in the northwestern corner of Virginia. There is a historical marker on the roadside but the actual home is down a drive and behind some trees. A well-placed sign at the entrance to the drive clearly states that the home is on private property and they don't want trespassers. So I was unable to get very close to the home, but it was still interesting to see. The Cather family lived here until Willa was nine years old, when they moved to Red Cloud, Nebraska (not far from where I will be driving in a couple of weeks).
