Far West

Photographs: the temple site at Far West with two of the cornerstones in the far right and left corners, the monument at the Far West temple site, looking toward the burial ground (about a mile away) from the Far West temple site.

Our next stop on the way to Kansas City was the site of Far West, Missouri. So much happened here that I couldn't possibly tell all about it in a single blog post. Far West was at one time a large LDS settlement. Diantha and Titus Billings lived here, as well as David and Phebe Patten. Joseph Smith dedicated a temple site here and construction was begun but never completed. The four cornerstones of that temple are the only remaining evidence that the town even existed. These have been preserved within glass enclosures and a monument has been erected within a fenced area at the roadside stop. Another beautiful setting, it's easy to understand why the pioneer Saints loved this place. After the Battle of Crooked River (several miles south of here on what is now private land), Apostle David Patten was buried in the Far West cemetery about a mile from the temple site, though there are no stones to mark the spot today, just miles and miles of green farm land.
