When Isaac Morley and Titus Billings fled Missouri in the fall of 1838 ahead of their families, they found refuge in southernmost Hancock County about halfway between Quincy to the south and what would become Nauvoo to the north. Here Isaac established a settlement that was known as Yelrome (Morley spelled backwards with and e on the end), the Morley Settlement or Morley Town. It was near the existing town of Lima and soon other Church members settled between Yelrome and Lima. After the Saints settled in Nauvoo, Joseph Smith created a Lima Stake with Isaac Morley as stake president. Titus and Diantha Billings spent some time in this settlement, but also had a home in Nauvoo, where Titus worked on the construction of the temple. The small town of Tioga now sits on the aproximate location of Morley Town. The only evidence of the 1840s settlement is a roadside marker.
