Leaving Nauvoo across the Mississippi River

Photographs: looking across the Mississippi toward Iowa, looking back toward the temple, Joseph and Brigham, a replica of a wagon on a ferry typical of the time period.

The first wagons carrying Saints westward left from the landing at the end of Parley Street in February of 1846. It was bitter cold and the street was muddy, not much like the sunny morning in May when we walked down that path on a manicured trail. Called the Trail of Hope, markers bearing quotes from contemporary journals line the walkway. At the end is a covered area with the names of many of the people who died along the overland trail, including Eliza Ockey, wife of Edward Ockey. There is also a statue here of Joseph Smith and Brigham Young looking toward the west.
