On Thursday morning (May 27th) we left Nauvoo driving north, crossed the Mississippi River to Iowa, and then drove south to Montrose. This area is where many of the Saints settled after coming from Missouri. John and Hannah Patten lived here, as well as James and Maria Louisa Patten Lemmon. And here is where Polly Patten died and was buried in a now-unmarked grave.
When the Saints left Nauvoo in the winter and spring of 1846, they crossed the river to Montrose, where they started their their trek across Iowa. In September of 1846, the final wave of LDS Church members (the poorer Saints) crossed the river to a landing a little north of Montrose, where there is now a nice memorial to all who came this way to head west. The river scenes are the view looking back at Nauvoo.
