The original Nauvoo Temple was dedicated in sections as it was completed so that sacred ordinances could be performed for the Saints before their planned exit from Nauvoo in the early spring of 1846. Within a few years after Church members moved west, their beautiful building was burned down by an arsonist and then hit by a tornado. The remaining stones were salvaged by other people in the community and can still be seen in several buildings in the area.
In April of 1999, Church President Gordon B. Hinckley announced that the Nauvoo Temple would be rebuilt on its original footprint. Ground was broken on October 24, 1999 and the completed building (financed by contributions from Church members throughout the world) was dedicated on June 27, 2002.
Randl and I spent a considerable amount of time walking around the temple on Wednesday afternoon (May 26th) and took many pictures from many different angles. Here is a selection, including the view from the temple, looking west out over the Mississippi River.
